Getting an Immigrant Visa Abroad

Once the immigrant petition is approved, USCIS will send the petition to the National Visa Center for Consular Processing. The NVC will then contact the intending immigrant to start the immigrant visa application process.

The Applicant must pay the required immigrant visa fee and submit a DS 260 application. The applicant must also submit all required documentation. The petitioner must also submit an affidavit of support (Form I-864) with the required documentation.

Once the case is documentarily qualified, the NVC will work with the U.S Embassy / Consular Post to schedule the immigrant visa interview. At the interview, the immigrant visa applicant must provide all the necessary original documents and a medical exam. Once this stage is approved, the immigrant visa applicant receives an immigrant visa foil on his or her valid passport.

With the immigrant visa, the immigrant visa applicant can now enter the United States as a lawful permanent resident. The green card will arrive in the mail in approximately 90 days.

Dependents

Your eligible dependents may be able to immigrate to the United States with you. This will largely depend on the category if visa that you are applying for.
